Ranking the Top 5 MLS Goalkeepers for All-Star Voting

MLS All-Star Voting is now open and the MLS allows you to pick just 1 GK (which is a mistake -- see bottom) but GKGrades.com has ranked the Top 5 MLS goalkeepers so far in 2010...

Statistics, especially Goals Against Average (GAA), can be deceiving for goalkeepers in this sport.  These rankings are based more on overall impression of technical ability, intelligence, and results.  Statistics are provided more as a helpful reference snapshot.

Top 5 MLS Goalkeepers (as of 05.26.2010)

1.  Donovan Ricketts (LA Galaxy)
WLT 8-0-1; 810 min; 7 SO; 26 saves; 0.929 Save %; 0.22 GAA

By far the most dominant goalkeeper in the MLS.   With only one vote allowed for each voter, this has to be the selection.

Although he has the privilege of being part of the best team in the league, his raw athleticism and shot stopping ability propels him to the top.  As is mentioned in his GKGrades report, "with an intense focus on cleaning up the technical aspects of his game, Ricketts could find himself in a higher-level league in the future."

2.  Kevin Hartman (FC Dallas)*
2-1-2; 450 min; 2 SO; 17 saves; 0.81 Save %; 0.8 GAA

It's confusing to me how Hartman did not start the year for Dallas.   Hartman has incredible instincts and courage.  Kevin finally got his start after the disaster game by Dario Sala, which was reviewed and graded by GKGrades.

3.  Stefan Frei (Toronto FC)
4-4-1; 810 min; 3 SO; 36 saves; 0.692 Save %; 0.68 GAA

Clutch goalkeeping for Tornoto.   Huge game against LA Galaxy.

4.  Matt Pickens (Colorado Rapids)
4-3-1; 720 min; 2 SO; 24 saves; 0.75 Save %; 0.88 GAA

Pickens is providing solid performances for Colorado.

5.  Will Hesmer (Columbus Crew)
6-0-2; 720 min; 4 SO; 30 saves; 0.769 Save %; 0.75 GAA

Hesmer is benefitting from a solid campaign being put forth by the Columbus Crew.   The Crew defense has been solid all year long and their record reflects that.   Hesmer deserves a spot on this list because the support he has provided to his squads' outstanding record.

Honorable Mention.

Bill Hamid (DC United)*
1-2-0; 270 min; 0 SO; 12 saves; 0.75 Save %; 1.00 GAA

Teenage goalkeeper who helped DC gather their first win of the season in his first professional start.   Huge potential for this youngster.   He was scored by GKGrades.com earlier in the year.

Preston Burpo (New England Revolution)
2-6-2; 900 min; 2 SO; 43 saves; 0.729 Save %; 1.5 GAA

Preston is my wild card as he has had some encouraging perfomances in the goal for New England.   Unfortunately this has not translated into good results for the Revolution.

* = Not on MLS All-Star Ballot

Why do I think that the MLS is wrong in allowing just one vote for a goalkeeper is wrong?
Well... the basis is simple.   Most people are "homers" for their home squad (or favorite squad).   So these folks will make the easy choice and pick the GK from their home team which skews good results.

If the MLS were to open it up to voting for 2 goalkeepers, you will still get the "homer" votes... but you will also force voters to think outside their allegiances and pick another GK that would be worthy of the designation.  Thus, providing a better sample for the MLS All-Star voting results.
