A Swiss international since 2006, Benaglio was called-up for the 2006 World Cup as third-choice behind Pascal Zuberbühler and Fabio Coltorti.
With consistently good performances in 2008, he was promoted to the starting line-up for Euro 2008, played on home soil. He has since retained his position as Switzerland's number 1 goalkeeper.
